Bernice Shaller was born in Washington, D.C., in 1952. She began drawing and painting as a child. Her painter mom and violinist dad discouraged her but her passion remained and she continued to work. Ms. Shaller received no formal art education. She developed her drawing and painting skills by copying from the masters at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and carrying a sketchbook, constantly drawing from life. She uses a variety of media, her preference being egg tempera and gold leaf.
Ms. Shaller received her BS Degree from the University of Maryland in Hearing and Speech Science and her MA Degree from George Washington University in Education and Human Development. Over the four decades of her career Ms. Shaller’s work has continued to evolve from painting traditional subjects to working more from her imagination and heart.
She has participated in many group exhibitions and her work is represented in public and private collections in the US and abroad. In 2005, Ms. Shaller was inducted into the National Association of Women Artists.
Her paintings are spiritual and her passion and love for her art are evident.
