Tom
Gardner
Painter, Sculptor
“I just paint”, says Tom.
Unpretentious-- in fact, anti-pretentious-- Tom Gardner is an artist
full of both feeling and thought who believes that art should be accessible
to everyone without explanation.
Like many artists, Tom Gardner paints because he must and has done so
since he was a child. After college, he continued to seek out workshops
and classes and to frequent galleries and museums. But mostly, to direct
him toward new territory, he studies the world around him and listens
to the voice within.
When he comes to Saint John each year, he hikes to places that are often
unseen by island visitors. He captures vistas and perspectives that feel
fresh and undiscovered.
His oils are his response to-and celebration of-the beauty he finds around
him.
Gardner sometimes fears these images may one day be all that’s
left of an endangered environment. But he prefers to hope that given
half a chance, the environment will fight back and survive.
And so with the brilliant permanence of his paintings, the subtle color
of hills, clarity of skies, and vitality of sea will continue to thrive.
